The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to suspend its planned protest against the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs, following discussions with government representatives. The NLC had initially announced the protest due to the financial burden the tariff hike would place on Nigerians. However, after a meeting at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, the union agreed to halt the protest pending further discussions.
NLC President Joe Ajaero confirmed that the government has agreed to form a committee to review the entire tariff structure. This committee will include five representatives from both the government and the NLC, with the goal of submitting their findings within two weeks. Ajaero emphasized that the NLC’s involvement is crucial in any stakeholder consultations moving forward.
While the symbolic protest letters have been put on hold, Ajaero warned that the union’s future actions, including protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals, will depend on the committee’s findings. The NLC also continues to voice concerns about other economic issues, such as high electricity tariffs and burdensome taxes on workers.
