The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the federal government to withdraw the Tax Reform Bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.
The proposed bills have sparked widespread criticism, particularly from northern leaders, who argue the reforms may disproportionately disadvantage their region.
In a New Year message titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” NLC President Joe Ajaero reaffirmed the union’s commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and a wage review to counter the soaring cost of living.
“As we enter 2025, we call on the government at all levels to prioritize policies that genuinely benefit citizens,” Ajaero stated. He emphasized the need for inclusivity, transparency, and social dialogue in governance, urging the federal government to involve all stakeholders in drafting a new tax law that fosters national development.
The NLC also demanded immediate compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and pledged to push for an upward wage review to address economic challenges faced by workers.
“The well-being of citizens and workers should be the cornerstone of governance,” Ajaero declared, calling for an end to violent engagements with unions and a commitment to industrial peace.
The NLC plans to hold a national dialogue in January 2025, aiming to co-create a tax system that enjoys broad support and drives progress. Ajaero concluded by urging Nigerians to unite in building a nation centered on workers’ welfare, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
