Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will appear before a new judge this month. The Federal High Court in Abuja has assigned his treason trial to a new judge, Justice James Omotosho, who has scheduled the hearing to begin on March 21, 2025. Hearing notices have been issued to all parties involved in the case.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that the legal team is prepared for the proceedings. He also announced that Justice Omotosho will handle the trial. Ejimakor stated, “It is now official that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will appear before a new judge on March 21, 2025. This is a significant milestone, and we are ready.”
He added, “The case will begin anew as if it has never been heard before. Everything that took place from 2015, when Kanu was arrested, to his last appearance before Justice Binta Nyako is now null and void, including the pending appeals.”
Ejimakor also noted that Kanu would be re-arraigned on charges that have yet to be disclosed. “We received the hearing notice, but no charges have been provided to us,” he said. “The government has a habit of serving charges just a day before the hearing, leaving little time for us to review them.”
It was also confirmed that the case file and relevant documents have been transferred to Justice Omotosho’s court, allowing for the issuance of hearing notices. Unless there are unexpected delays, Kanu is expected to be re-arraigned on the remaining seven counts in the treason charge filed against him by the Federal Government.
