The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, accusing him of turning a blind eye to the role of Minister Nyesom Wike in the crisis. In a statement issued by its chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the forum expressed solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the people of Rivers State, calling the move a direct attack on democracy.
The governors condemned Wike’s unchecked influence, stating that his actions have been tolerated due to his alignment with the president. They described the emergency declaration as a politically motivated assault on the opposition, warning that it threatens democracy, security, and national stability.
The PDP also cited concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which questioned the legality of suspending elected officials and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic governance. The party called on Nigerians and the international community to resist what it termed a dangerous precedent undermining the nation’s constitutional order.
