Governors elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are meeting today (Monday) in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a crucial gathering aimed at addressing growing tensions threatening the party’s unity and future.
Sources told The PUNCH on Sunday that the emergency meeting, organized by the PDP Governors’ Forum, will focus on key issues, including the Supreme Court’s recent reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary. The court’s March 21 ruling overturned lower court decisions that briefly replaced Anyanwu with Sunday Udeh-Okoye. Despite initially backing Udeh-Okoye, the PDP has yet to comment on the ruling that restored Anyanwu, who is a known ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Also high on the agenda is the deepening political crisis in Rivers State. The governors are expected to discuss the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara—who is also PDP’s Vice Chairman—following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state. The move has intensified political unrest in the region.
The meeting will also consider former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent calls for a merger of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The governors are expected to weigh the practicality and potential impact of such a merger on the PDP’s structure and future electoral chances.
Beyond crisis management, the governors will also strategize on party reconciliation, strengthening internal unity, and preparing for the upcoming elections.
Today’s meeting in Ibadan is seen as a pivotal moment for the PDP as it tries to steady itself amid internal conflicts, legal challenges, and increasing external pressure.
