Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, revealed on Sunday that his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, is expected to join the SDP, following in the footsteps of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Adebayo shared this information during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
In recent months, Obi’s interactions with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition leaders have sparked speculation about his loyalty to the Labour Party, with many wondering if he plans to leave. However, the former Anambra State governor has repeatedly affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party.
Despite this, Adebayo maintained on Sunday that he had reliable information suggesting Obi was planning to join the SDP. He said, “People are joining my party, and we are happy to welcome them. We’re dealing with some minor issues around ensuring everyone respects the rules, but we’re glad to have them.
“El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, and even Peter Obi are all coming. We are welcoming everyone.”
When asked directly if Obi was indeed joining the SDP, Adebayo hesitated before confirming that he had been informed. “Until someone officially joins, we can’t be certain. But the Financial Secretary of the SDP has told me they are in talks, and we’ll welcome everyone,” he stated.
Adebayo also emphasized the SDP’s commitment to transparency and integrity, noting their successful convention in 2022. He added, “If people join our party and follow our rules, we’ll provide Nigerians with a strong alternative, defeat the APC, and send President Tinubu to Lagos or wherever he chooses.”
