The coffin of Pope Francis arrived at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on Saturday, where he was laid to rest following a solemn funeral at St. Peter’s Square.

After the funeral, the white popemobile carried the late pontiff’s coffin through Rome, with tens of thousands lining the streets to pay their final respects. Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88, was the first Latin American Pope and was widely known as a voice for the poor and marginalized.

Crowds of mourners filled St. Peter’s Square for the funeral, some arriving overnight to secure a place. The ceremony was attended by numerous world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who briefly met during the service.

During his 12-year papacy, the Argentine Pope worked to guide the Catholic Church toward greater inclusivity and compassion.
