The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged assault on journalists during the recent #TakeItBackProtest.

This follows a formal complaint submitted by the Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), which called for an apology from the police within 14 days and threatened to boycott police activities in the state.

In response, the police issued a statement on Wednesday, with spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko emphasizing the importance of the media as a strategic partner and condemning the actions of some officers involved. The command assured the public that the investigation would be handled with the utmost seriousness, and the findings would be made public.

The statement reads: “The Rivers State Police Command has received with concern the complaints from our strategic partner, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, regarding the alleged assault on its members during a recent protest. The Command strongly condemns this incident and has launched a thorough investigation. Preliminary findings have identified some officers, who are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry.”

The statement continued: “The Rivers State Police Command holds journalists in high regard, acknowledging their critical role in promoting peace, security, and development through their reporting. We regret any actions that may have harmed this longstanding relationship and assure the NUJ and the public that this matter will be treated with the seriousness it deserves. The findings and measures taken will be made public once the investigation is concluded.”

The Command also confirmed its knowledge of the planned protest, stating that officers were deployed to ensure safety and security. However, they distanced themselves from what they described as overzealous behavior by some officers.

“We were aware of the protest and deployed personnel to provide security for all, including citizens, residents, and the press,” the statement said. “Our presence was crucial in preventing criminal elements from hijacking the peaceful protest. The Command is committed to protecting lives and property, carrying out its duties with professionalism, empathy, and respect for human rights.”

The police also reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards unprofessional conduct, thanking the NUJ and the public for their understanding and support as they work to uphold the integrity of the force.
