Pope Francis, historic reformer and head of the Catholic Church, dies aged 88

Pope Francis, the influential leader of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City, has passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death following a prolonged battle with respiratory illness, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and kidney complications. He had been discharged from Gemelli Hospital in Rome on March 23 after weeks of treatment.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first Jesuit and the first pope from the Americas. His papacy was marked by progressive reforms, including his openness toward LGBTQ+ inclusion, advocacy for climate action, and a vocal stance against sexual abuse within the Church.

Before joining the clergy, Francis lived a humble life, working as a bouncer, janitor, and lab technician. His approachable demeanor and focus on humility and social justice earned him admiration well beyond Catholic circles.

As per Vatican tradition, his death will initiate nine days of mourning, and a papal conclave will soon convene in Rome. Cardinals from around the world, including Australia’s Bishop Mykola Bychok, will gather in secret to elect the next pope.

While most popes are buried in St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis had expressed a wish to be laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, just outside the Vatican walls.

With his passing, the world bids farewell to a transformative figure who sought to modernize the Church and reach those on society’s margins.
