Doctors have announced that Pope Francis is no longer in imminent danger of death after battling double pneumonia, which has kept him hospitalized for almost a month. The 88-year-old pope has been receiving treatment at Gemelli Hospital since February 14 for a severe respiratory infection, with his condition continuously evolving.
The Vatican confirmed that the pope’s doctors lifted an earlier “guarded” prognosis, indicating he is no longer in immediate danger. The pontiff’s condition has improved in recent days, with blood tests, clinical assessments, and his positive response to medication all confirming his stability.
While the “guarded” prognosis has been removed, the Vatican stated that Pope Francis will continue receiving medical treatment in the hospital for several more days, though it is unclear when he will be discharged. This marks the longest absence of the pope since his appointment.
Last week, Pope Francis recorded a brief audio message expressing gratitude for the prayers offered for his health. “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers in the Square for my health,” he said, speaking in Spanish and pausing to breathe deeply. “May God bless you.”
