Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced a remarkable 30% increase in the country’s power generation capacity in 2024.
Speaking during his ministry’s 2025 budget defence before the Senate Committee on Power at the National Assembly on Monday, January 13, Adelabu highlighted the progress made under his leadership.
“When I assumed office in 2023, I met an average power generation of 4,100 megawatts. By the end of 2024, we achieved a peak generation of 5,528 megawatts,” Adelabu stated.
He attributed the increase to strategic developments, including the commissioning of the Zungeru hydroelectric power dam, which added 700 megawatts to the grid, as well as enhancements made by other existing generation companies.
Although the ministry initially set a target of 6,000 megawatts for 2024, the minister acknowledged that challenges such as grid collapses prevented the target from being fully met, though the shortfall was minimal.
Adelabu’s announcement underscores the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s power infrastructure and addressing long-standing energy challenges.
