Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has been named the Best Woman of the Year at the Independent Awards 2024, a recognition she dedicated to Nigerian women and youth for their significant contributions to the nation’s growth and development.
The award was presented at the Independent Awards 2024 Gala Night, held on Saturday in Lagos, where Mrs. Tinubu was represented by Hajia Fatima Tajudeen, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. In her acceptance speech, the First Lady praised the tireless efforts of Nigerian women and youth, describing them as the “unsung heroes” of Nigeria’s progress.
She expressed deep gratitude to the board of Independent Newspaper for the recognition, stating that it would serve as further inspiration for her to continue contributing to the country’s national development.
The Independent Awards celebrate exceptional achievements across various sectors, including politics, entertainment, business, and education.
In addition to Mrs. Tinubu’s recognition, Chief Olabode George, PDP leader in the South-West, called on President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, urging prompt action to prevent further escalation. He emphasized that Rivers State is vital to Nigeria’s economy and must be safeguarded from chaos.
The event also honored 36 individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to Nigeria’s development. Notable awardees included Governor Seyi Makinde, who was named Independent Man of the Year, and Chief Bisi Akande, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2024.
Other award recipients included Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra (Governor of the Year 2024 – Urban Renewal), Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River (Economic Transformation), and Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa (Governor of the Year 2024 – Solid Minerals Development).
In entertainment, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, also known as Kiekie, was named Social Media Influencer of the Year, while in business, Otunba Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom, was recognized. Other honorees included Charles Odi, DG of SMEDAN, and Prof Abayomi Fasina of FUOYE.
