A prison officer in Harare, Zimbabwe, has been arrested in connection with the escape of an inmate who managed to break free during a violent incident at the Harare Magistrates Court. The inmate, 29-year-old Luke Zinyengere, was awaiting sentencing for his role in a high-profile armed robbery at Quest Financial Services in February 2024, where over $700,000 was stolen.

On March 21, 2025, Zinyengere broke free from his restraints during a shootout with prison guards. He hijacked a Mazda Demio to flee the scene. The prison officer, Donald Madzinga, has been charged with aiding the escape, with law enforcement sources confirming that he allegedly supplied Zinyengere with the firearm used in the incident.

Zinyengere had been on trial for the daring robbery, one of the largest in Harare’s recent history. On February 25, 2024, Zinyengere and a group of armed accomplices stormed Quest Financial Services and stole over $700,000. Zinyengere and several others were arrested shortly after the heist.

Two security guards at Quest Financial Services were also implicated for failing to report the cash dropped during the escape and were sentenced to 48 months in prison.

Following Zinyengere’s dramatic escape, authorities have launched an extensive manhunt to recapture him. The incident has raised concerns over security protocols at the Harare Magistrates Court and the prison system. Law enforcement has urged the public to report any sightings of Zinyengere or the stolen Mazda Demio. The escape has sparked widespread media attention and public outrage, with calls for stronger security measures to prevent future incidents.
