The Rivers State House of Assembly has declared full support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in the state, endorsing the appointment of retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator. This was confirmed in a statement by Speaker Martin Amaewhule on Wednesday, March 19.
President Tinubu declared the state of emergency on March 18, citing political instability and an ongoing power struggle. The move also led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and 27 state assembly members.
Amaewhule, representing the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, welcomed the president’s action, blaming Governor Fubara for “serial disobedience to court orders and constitutional violations.” He accused the governor of obstructing legislative duties and acting in a tyrannical manner.
Describing the emergency declaration as necessary for national stability, Amaewhule urged Rivers residents to remain calm as the sole administrator assumes control. He assured the public that the assembly would fully cooperate with the federal government to ensure a smooth transition.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly will provide all necessary support to the sole administrator for the benefit of our state,” he affirmed.
