Chief Magistrate Ejike George of the Rivers State Judiciary has formally resigned, citing discomfort with the appointment of a Sole Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs. In his resignation letter dated April 11, 2025, and addressed to the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State via the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, George described the decision as both difficult and regrettable.
Titled “Voluntary Retirement from Service,” the letter reflects George’s unease with what he termed a “quasi-military administration,” which he believes contradicts the principles of the legal profession.
“This type of governance system is not only alien but also runs antithetical to our hallowed profession as legal practitioners and adjudicators,” he wrote.
George, who has served 16 years in the judiciary and has 22 years of legal experience overall, emphasized that continuing under the current arrangement would amount to “tacit and naive acquiescence.”
He concluded his letter with gratitude: “Thanks, Milord, for the opportunity to serve.”
