The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has expressed concern over the non-payment of salaries to local government workers in the state since February. The NLC has threatened to withdraw its members from services if the workers’ salaries, including March’s pay, are not settled by the end of the month.
State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, made this statement during a news briefing following a meeting of the body’s executive council in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He also called for the implementation of the minimum wage in the state’s local government areas by the end of March.
Agwanwor added that the NLC fully supports the national labour leadership’s stance on the state of emergency in Rivers State. He emphasized, “Salaries for all public workers in the Rivers State Civil Service should be paid by the end of March. If by then, local government workers’ salaries and the minimum wage are not implemented, we will take steps to withdraw our members from services in all local governments and the public sector.”
The NLC chairman stressed that workers should not be affected by the political issues in the state, saying, “Workers are not partisan and should not suffer due to the political crisis in the state.” He further stated that salaries for local government workers have not been paid since February 2025 and reiterated the demand for immediate action to implement the minimum wage and pay outstanding salaries by the end of March, or they will withdraw their services.
