Rivers State Government Stunned as Tinubu Dismisses Fubara, But Retains Wike

It?s shocking Tinubu sacked Fubara and left Wike - Rivers state government

The Rivers State Government has expressed its surprise over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while leaving in place the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, a key figure in the political crisis that has plagued the state for some time.

In a statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government argued that the President’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State is unjust. Governor Fubara has remained steadfast in his commitment to upholding constitutional order, peace, and good governance despite the ongoing political turmoil.

Johnson emphasized that since taking office, Governor Fubara has made the protection of lives and property a priority while driving the state’s progress. Even amidst political instability, the governor has adhered to his constitutional responsibilities and put the interests of the people above personal or political agendas.

The commissioner also noted that, after President Tinubu’s intervention to mediate peace, the Rivers State Government acted in good faith by implementing the agreed terms, including reinstating commissioners who had resigned. Additionally, the state government promptly complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling once it received the certified true copy of the judgment, demonstrating its commitment to the rule of law and democratic processes.

Despite these efforts, Johnson argued that lawmakers loyal to Wike, a former governor of the state, have continued to obstruct peace and stability. He expressed surprise that while Governor Fubara has been removed, Wike, who he described as the central figure in the crisis, remains in office.

“It is shocking that the President has removed the governor but left his minister, who is the key actor in the crisis,” Johnson stated.

The Rivers State Government urged the state’s residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding while reaffirming its commitment to engaging with all relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure the continued growth of Rivers State.

“We are a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson concluded.

The Rivers State Government reiterated its dedication to prioritizing the well-being and prosperity of its citizens while navigating the unfolding political situation.
