Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has introduced a “no school fees, no exam” policy for the upcoming first semester exams. This announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, during a pre-examination roadshow at the university’s main campus in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Prof. Zeb-Obipi, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Victor Akujuru, urged students to resist the temptation of misusing the school fees provided by their parents, such as spending it on gambling or other frivolous activities. He emphasized that such actions make things more difficult for both the students and their sponsors.

The Vice-Chancellor also reminded students to ensure they register their courses in advance of the exams, scheduled to begin on April 22, 2025. He explained that failure to register would result in their names not appearing on the attendance sheet, preventing them from sitting for the exams.

Prof. Zeb-Obipi remarked, “As students, your primary responsibility is to pay your fees and attend classes. Some of you divert the fees given to you for other purposes, like gambling or risky investments. When the money doesn’t come back, you fail to pay your fees or register, which creates unnecessary complications. Today, we’ve taken the time to sensitize everyone on the importance of paying and registering. Lecturers have been informed, and if your name isn’t on the attendance sheet, you will not be allowed to take the exam. You can only be added to the list if you’ve paid your fees and completed your registration.”

He continued, “Please, do yourself a favor. Don’t let one semester’s fees cause embarrassment for you or your parents. Pay your fees and ensure you register for the exams. Registration is crucial for ensuring your name is on the attendance list, which is essential for sitting your exams without any issues. On behalf of the Vice Chancellor, who is unavoidably absent, I now declare this roadshow open to raise awareness among the students and the entire university community on the importance of paying fees and registering for exams.”

Prof. Zeb-Obipi also encouraged students to consider applying for the Federal Government’s NELFUND student loan, particularly those facing financial difficulties. “NELFUND is a real opportunity. Consult the Directorate of Student Affairs for information on how to apply. If you qualify, you’ll receive an interest-free loan that can cover your fees. You won’t need to repay it until after graduation, once you’ve worked for two years. Instead of deferring your studies because of financial challenges, apply for NELFUND and take advantage of this federal assistance.”

In addition, the Registrar, Mrs. Ibimonia Harry, addressed the students regarding the option of a one-year deferment for those dealing with financial, health, or personal issues. She also warned against involvement in examination malpractice, stressing that anyone caught would face the university’s disciplinary actions.

Mrs. Harry stated, “If you encounter challenges that prevent you from continuing your studies, such as financial difficulties, illness, or other personal issues, you may apply for a one-year deferment. You will need to pay for the year and submit an application through your Head of Department to the Dean, Registrar, or Vice Chancellor for approval. It’s also important to avoid engaging in exam malpractice, as it can lead to serious consequences, including suspension or expulsion. The university has strict rules against cheating, and anyone caught will face the appropriate punishment. Avoid any form of malpractice, such as writing on your body or using unauthorized materials.”

The university authorities are keen to ensure that students adhere to the rules and guidelines for a smooth examination process.
