RSIEC Announces New Date for Local Government Elections in Rivers State

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has set a new date for the Local Government Area elections, now scheduled for August 9, 2025. This decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that nullified the 2024 elections due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retired), made the announcement on Wednesday, March 5, during a stakeholder meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. During the meeting, the timetable and guidelines for the upcoming elections were officially unveiled.

Enebeli emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, credible, and impartial election, urging political parties to comply with the electoral rules.

The Supreme Court’s decision on February 28, 2025, had annulled the October 5, 2024, elections, ruling that RSIEC had failed to follow the legal requirements of the Electoral Act. The previous elections saw the Action Peoples Party (APP) win 22 out of 23 local government chairmanship seats, after the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) declined to participate in the process.
