“Sanusi Speaks Out: Why the Former CBN Governor Won’t Support Tinubu’s Reforms”

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has explained why he refuses to comment on President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, citing a lack of willingness to assist an administration that has not treated him fairly.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Lagos as the chairman of the 21st Anniversary of Fawehinmiism (Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture), the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor shared his reasons for remaining silent on the administration’s policies.

Sanusi stated, “Honestly, I can give a few points that explain what we’re going through, how much of it was predictable, and perhaps even avoidable. But I have chosen not to speak about the economy or the reforms. If I explain, it would help this government—and I don’t want to help this government.”

Reflecting on his personal experiences, Sanusi said he initially supported the government but decided to step back after feeling that he was not treated like a friend. He criticized the administration for lacking credible voices to communicate its economic policies to the public.

“Let them explain to Nigerians why these policies are being pursued. I am not going to assist. I’ve chosen to watch, like enjoying a good movie with popcorn in hand,” he remarked.

Sanusi acknowledged that while some of the current economic challenges are unavoidable, they stem from decades of poor economic management. He concluded by stating that not all of the government’s actions are correct but declined to delve deeper into specifics.

“What we are experiencing today is, in part, the result of years of irresponsible economic decisions. People were warned about this trajectory long ago, but they refused to listen,” he said.
