The Nigerian Senate is set to meet with key security chiefs next week in Abuja to address the growing security challenges across the country. The meeting is expected to include high-ranking officials such as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar, among others.
This follows the urgent motion presented by Senator Titus Zam on the need for the federal government to deploy troops to restore law and order in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State, where frequent attacks by suspected herdsmen have resulted in killings and destruction.
The Senate has called for immediate security intervention and urged relevant authorities, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, to provide relief to affected communities. Additionally, the Senate emphasized the enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law to ensure lasting peace in Benue State.
Senator Zam highlighted that recent attacks, such as the invasion of Gyaruwa community on March 10, 2025, have severely impacted the region, prompting protests from locals against the government’s failure to protect them.
