South Africa called for reforms to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Friday after US President Donald Trump imposed broad tariffs, stressing that all nations must adhere to global trade rules.

Trade Minister Parks Tau explained that the tariffs, including a 31% tariff on US imports from South Africa, would significantly disrupt global trade. He added that the tariffs undermine the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides duty-free access for products from around 30 sub-Saharan African countries.

Tau pointed out that the WTO’s rules were not considered when the US set the tariffs, and he called for reform to ensure the WTO adapts to current trade realities. “We need to reinforce a multilateral system of trade and transparency across borders,” he said.

South Africa, which holds the rotating presidency of the G20 this year, emphasized the importance of a common set of trade rules. “Nations must meet and agree on a shared set of rules,” Tau stated, highlighting the importance of the WTO system not only for developing countries but for developed ones as well.

South Africa is seeking clarification from the US on how the 31% tariff on its goods was determined. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola said the tariffs would impact various sectors, including the automotive and agriculture industries, potentially affecting jobs and growth.

In 2024, the United States accounted for 7.45% of South Africa’s total exports, while South Africa made up only 0.4% of US imports, Lamola noted, adding that South Africa does not pose a threat to the US.
