Fubara Vs. Wike: Power Struggle Threatens Rivers State’s Governance

Political analysts have attributed the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State to the alleged power struggle of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike is perceived as a key ally of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, fueling speculations about his influence in the state’s leadership crisis.

The tension in the oil-rich state intensified following a Supreme Court ruling that favored the pro-Wike faction, leading to renewed threats of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.

Chief Martin Onovo, a seasoned politician and former presidential candidate, highlighted possible solutions, emphasizing negotiation as the primary approach. “The parties can reach a negotiated settlement, but Wike has ignored peace efforts from groups like the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF),” he noted. Onovo also suggested that President Tinubu could intervene directly by calling Wike to order or even removing him from his ministerial position.

Dr. Victor Mathew, a security expert and cleric, expressed his disappointment in Wike’s actions, accusing him of prioritizing personal power and control over governance. “Wike’s actions show a deep obsession for power with little regard for the people’s welfare,” Mathew stated.

Mathew also called on Rivers residents to be more proactive in demanding a resolution to the crisis, arguing that their division along ethnic lines is being exploited by politicians. “The people must be more vocal and assertive in seeking a quick and amicable resolution,” he said.

Both analysts agree that a political resolution remains the best path forward. They urge Wike and the lawmakers to set aside personal ambitions for the overall progress of Rivers State.
