Supreme Court Refutes Claims Justice Agim Accompanied Wike To UNICAL Convocation

                    Justice Emmanuel Agim

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed reports claiming that Justice Emmanuel Agim accompanied the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to a convocation ceremony at the University of Calabar.

In a statement on Monday, the Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Akande Festus, clarified that Justice Agim attended the event as an honoree and alumnus. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law by the university’s Governing Council in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the legal profession.

Festus explained, “We wish to address the misleading reports circulating on social media and other news platforms regarding Justice Agim’s attendance at the convocation ceremony at the University of Calabar on Saturday, 22nd March 2025. It has been falsely suggested that he accompanied Minister Nyesom Wike to the event, which is entirely inaccurate.”

He emphasized that Justice Agim was recognized for his commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law, serving as a role model for aspiring legal professionals and students.

While Justice Agim was originally scheduled to attend the burial of Justice Stanley Alagoa in Bayelsa State alongside other Supreme Court Justices, he sought permission to attend the University of Calabar convocation instead. Festus stressed that his participation was in a personal capacity, with no official ties to any government ministry or department.

“Any insinuation otherwise is not only false but undermines the judicial independence that is vital to our democracy,” the statement read. The Supreme Court also urged the public and media to verify information through credible sources to avoid spreading misinformation.
