President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a humble servant of God and a tireless advocate for the poor and vulnerable.

In a statement released on Easter Monday, April 21, the President praised the late Pontiff for his life of service, compassion, and spiritual leadership.

“With a heavy heart, I join Catholics and Christians around the world in mourning Pope Francis—a man of deep humility, unwavering faith, and a guiding light to millions,” Tinubu said. “His passing, so soon after Easter, marks a sacred return to his Creator during a season of renewed hope.”

Reflecting on the Pope’s legacy since his 2013 election, Tinubu highlighted his messages of mercy, justice, and care for the planet. “He called on the world to see Christ in the poor and forgotten, to welcome the stranger, and to protect our common home.”

The President also commended Pope Francis as a global bridge-builder and advocate for peace. “In a divided world, he stood as an instrument of unity, reminding us of our shared humanity.”

Remembering the Pope’s final Easter message and appearance, Tinubu added: “We had just rejoiced at signs of recovery—yet a day later, the Lord called him home.”

Tinubu concluded by calling on people to honour the Pope’s memory through action: “Let us not only mourn, but also carry forward his mission—uplifting the weak, healing division, and defending human dignity.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and Christians worldwide on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria.
