The Lapai community in Niger State is in deep mourning after the tragic deaths of three brothers from the same family within just two weeks. The heartbreaking incidents, which have left locals in shock, involved a drowning and a fatal sports injury.
The most recent tragedy occurred on Thursday morning, April 10, 2025, when two brothers, Ismail Alaba and his sibling, drowned in the Katcha River. The brothers were reportedly returning home with bags of rice when the accident took place. Eyewitnesses believe their canoe may have capsized, leading to the fatal outcome.
Just days earlier, the family had been grieving the loss of their eldest son, who died after suffering serious injuries during a local football match. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his wounds.
Ismail Alaba, one of the deceased, was well-known and respected in the Lapai community. Described as cheerful, hardworking, and sociable, he ran a thriving Point of Sale (POS) business at the Low-Cost Junction in Lapai. His sudden death, along with his brothers’, has left the town in shock.
