The FCT Police Command has confirmed a tragic motor vehicle accident that occurred around 6:58 PM on Wednesday, March 19, near Nyanya Bridge, resulting in six fatalities and the destruction of fourteen vehicles.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the command reported that a distress call was received by the Karu Division, which indicated that a trailer heavily loaded with cement, approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, lost control and collided with stationary vehicles trapped in traffic.
Adeh explained that the crash triggered a devastating fire that engulfed fourteen vehicles. “Panic and chaos followed as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped. Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their bodies have been transferred to Karu General Hospital Morgue,” she said.
She further stated that police operatives, in partnership with fire service personnel, other security agencies, and brave individuals at the scene, worked together to contain the fire and restore normal traffic flow.
“The FCT Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assures the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and prevent similar incidents in the future. We urge the public to drive with caution and adhere to speed limits, particularly in high-traffic areas, as safe driving practices can help prevent such tragedies,” Adeh emphasized.
