        Two dead, 13 missing in Bayelsa boat mishap

Two people have died, and 13 others remain missing after two boats collided head-on in Akede community, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

According to a source speaking to Daily Trust, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening, April 1, 2025. A speedboat carrying passengers from Eropa community in Southern Ijaw collided with a fishing boat.

The source mentioned that divers are currently searching the waters in an attempt to rescue any missing passengers.

The speedboat, named Meeting Marine, was operated by a man named Saturday. The boat, powered by a 115HP engine, was traveling from Anyama Ijaw to Lubia and Foropa communities when it crashed into the fishing boat at the Akede Community waterfront.

Comrade Ogoniba Ipigansi, Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, confirmed the incident, stating that 13 passengers are still missing. He also noted that communication challenges in the area, including poor network coverage, have hindered rescue efforts.
