An unattended gas cooker sparked a fire on Wednesday in the Oke-Apomu area of Ilorin, Kwara State, destroying seven rooms in a 20-room building. The fire, which broke out around 2 p.m., engulfed a storey building at Alfa Koro compound, causing significant damage before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was caused by an unattended gas cooker.
“The Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call at 13:53 hours on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, regarding a fire outbreak at No. 90 Koro Compound, Oke-Apomu, Ilorin,” Adekunle said. “Our team responded quickly and arrived to find several rooms engulfed in flames. We managed to save 13 of the 20 rooms, while seven were severely affected by the fire.”
Preliminary investigations confirmed the cause of the fire as an unattended gas cooker. Prince Falade John, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, urged the public to always prioritize fire safety to prevent similar incidents.
