A tragic drowning incident occurred at the Gwange River Bank in Maiduguri, Borno State, claiming the life of a University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) student, while another was rescued. The incident took place on the evening of March 14, 2025, around 7:00 p.m., when students Abafras Abdiel from the Department of Forestry and Silas Sule from the Department of Geology went to the river behind ECWA Church to swim.
While diving, both students drowned, prompting an immediate emergency response. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, a combined rescue team, including police, divers, and fire service personnel, was quickly dispatched to the scene. The team successfully retrieved both students and rushed them to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
Unfortunately, Silas Sule was pronounced dead by doctors upon arrival, while Abafras Abdiel was admitted for treatment. Silas’s body was later deposited at the hospital for an autopsy and further investigation.
Authorities have urged students and residents to exercise caution when engaging in activities near water, particularly during the dry season, when river currents can be unpredictable.
